Luc Ferrari • Looking East.
I’m gearing up for the last concentrated music-stretch of the year, centered around a trip to Eastern Europe to attend/perform a 2-hour “Playthrough” at Silent Night #20 in Prague preceded directly by a 4-channel “Redactions/Generators” blend at the NEXT festival in Bratislava; these just after the Luc Ferrari: Stereo Spasms events at Pioneer Works here in Brooklyn the week prior (spoiler: Jon “Wobbly” Leidecker & will be performing “Les Protorhythmiques” in a manner both reverential to and, hopefully, completely at odds with the linked canonic Thom Lehn & ErikM take, and I will tackle Brunhild/Luc’s piano/Polaroid part in the Chicago version of Tautologos III as well as perform a solo “Redaction” based on Luc’s ‘58/’59 Tape Music études in honor/awe of their 50th birthday).
(A couple of embeds: left below is a recent live performance of the “Acid Causality” suite that I’ve yet to commit to tape/wax/digital; right below is a great, recent 2-hour b2b w/ Ryan Martin of Dais Records fame).
Finally, here’s a great (multi-camera!) video of my presentation on the “Playthroughs” system(s) at Cycling ‘74’s Expo 74 at Mass MoCA this past April. I gave many talks, workshops, and classes this year (there are audio embeds of a couple more trailing below) but this was a special one in that it was a front-door invitation from the makers of the software package within which I realized much of my music over the years to expand on perhaps an unconventional artist-approach; it felt great to map out the complexities afforded to the performer working in software systems in such a sympathetic way.
