The 30-odd Occlusions (2012-2014) were an attempt to yield a Free Jazz sensibility with the automatic, aleatoric timing & event-generations engines in a specific configuration of a Hybrid Digital / Analogue Modular Synthesizer. While there are a handful of “Studio” realizations (notably, on the “Split” LP w/ Eli Keszler on NNA Tapes, April 2012) the piece was largely a real-time, “Live Electronic” affair that was extensively traveled & presented over a concentrated 2-year burst of activity. The canonic recorded versions are the “Occlusions;” LP on Editions Mego (June 2012, featuring two of the first three performances at Ateliers de Bitche & Paradiso), the pair of “Live Occlusions (1) & (2)” cassettes (January 2013, featuring the performances at La Casa Encendida, Les Ateliers Claus, Günter, & Espai Cultural de Obra Social Caja Madrid) & the 2-disc “Live Occlusions (3) & (4)” set (January 2014, ditto, Stadtgarden, Berghain, Cafe Oto, & Arnolfini). The liner notes to the piece's eventual release on Editions Mego clarify:

Occlusions is a loose framework for a multi-channel, freely improvised piece of LIVE ELECTRONIC MUSIC, performed without the aid or consent of pre-recorded or even pre-arranged materials of any kind. A given realization will last between 10 and 30 minutes ; time is elastic. Every effort has been made to avoid divisible rhythms (although mistakes are occasionally made) ... Still, I consider it a "kind" of Dance Music.

These two early realizations, recorded a week apart at festivals in France and The Netherlands during February 2012, capture the piece (much like those on the Generators LP) in two entirely different iterations, in states of (A) a mildly inebriated bliss & (B) an arbitrarily triggered blind rage. Both recordings were made at 24-bit, 96khz through the absolute cheapest means available to the consumer to do so. They sound fantastic.

Occlusions is a companion piece to Generators in that they share the same tool-set ... however, it is the FREE JAZZ yang to Generator's MINIMALIST yin. It is not recommended to those seeking meter, melody, cleanliness, or a clearly outlined organizational sense.
